FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

I need to buy a cemetery plot/grave, where do I go first?
Come by the Town's Operations Center located at 653 NC Highway 42 West, at the intersection of NC Hwy. 42W and Guy Road, where you will be referred to a member of our Public Works staff. Our staff member will first need to determine which cemetery you are interested in and then identify plots or graves that may interest you. The next step would be to visit the appropriate cemetery with our staff to view the site or sites you have chosen. After selection of the plot(s) or grave(s), you would then go back to the Operations Center and complete the appropriate forms with the Public Works Administrative Support Specialist.

What is the cost for a grave?
The cost for a grave is $600.00 per grave.

When I have selected the plot/grave(s) that I wish to purchase, how can I pay for it?
The Town offers two options: 1) pay in full, or 2) pay $50 deposit (minimum) with the balance for one grave due on or before June 30th following the purchase. If more than one site is purchased, the balance of each additional grave is due, annually, on or before June 30", until all graves have been paid for. For example, if you were to purchase four (4) graves you would have a maximum of three (3) years, from June 30th following the original purchase, to pay for the properties. No burial shall take place or no deed shall be executed until grave site is paid in full. Any grave not paid for in full according to these terms will revert to the Town with no refunds being granted. Hardship cases will be determined by the Town Manager. Cemetery Ordinance (92.01.C)

Will I need a deed for my plot/grave?
After each grave is paid in full, a deed will be completed and filed with the Register of Deeds in the Johnston County Courthouse. The deed will then be sent to the rightful owner of the property, per Cemetery Ordinance (92.01.A). Please remember to retain this legal document for future reference.

Can I transfer this property to another person or persons?
First, contact the Operations Center (919-553-1530) and request a Transfer of Cemetery Lot form. After completing this form, submit your completed form along with your deed to the Pubic Works Administrative Support Specialist. This form will legally document the transfer of ownership of said property from the original owner(s) to the person or persons that will become the new owner of the property. The Town will draw up a new deed for the site and will take the new deed to be recorded by the Johnston County Register of Deeds. This will not take place until all applicable fees are paid by the owner. Cemetery Ordinance (92.01.6)
